Orit Shares Her Story

20 years ago, I first read the book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD. I was on vacation, listening to news about yet another war in my country Israel. I wondered if Marshall’s approach to conflict resolution really stood a chance with wars of such magnitude.

I remember reading the book, and hoping that maybe if I learned this way of thinking, I could at least help myself overcome some of the challenges I seemed to experience frequently - challenges that came partially as a result of growing up in an area affected by war. Little did I know that this approach would support me in every aspect of my life.

After reading the book over and over again to the point that I remembered many parts of it by heart, I decided to actually go and study Nonviolent Communication™ (NVC™). First, I took some local workshops. Later, I went to longer seminars with Marshall and other trainers. There, I saw how people who were so angry were able to diffuse their tension with the help of a qualified trainer. It amazed me to witness their facial expressions and body language transform over the course of a session. I wondered if I would ever be able to help people in that way.

Before I could help anybody, I needed to actively practice NVC™ in my own life. At the time, I was a mother at home, struggling with depression/bipolar, and I needed to find a way to take care of my health and my family. Kathy Aichner, my trainer at the time, introduced me to Victoria Kindle Hodson. It was a match made in heaven. She became my trainer, counselor, and mentor.

Over the years that Victoria guided me, we practiced the NVC™ process with a helpful tool that she and Sura Hart created called the No-Fault Zone® game. It consists of a card deck with feelings, needs, and choices written on them. As you place the cards that reflect your situation on the mat, they help you visualize and understand your inner experience.

I learned to pay attention to my feelings and use them as a signal to identify my needs. I understood that when I ignored my needs consciously or unconsciously, I was sabotaging my health, my relationships, and my joy.

I started to pay close attention to the things that brought joy to my life and gave them priority in my day. I became an active participant, creating the life I wanted for myself. The improvement was so noticeable that I decided to write a self-help book for mothers called Now It’s Your Time, Mom!.

I published the book, yet I still didn't feel ready to guide others. It took me a few more years until I finally started to teach classes in all aspects of self-care: healthy cooking, journaling, arts and crafts, and yes, even the No-Fault Zone® process.

I have tremendous faith in this practice. I see how women enter my classes or private sessions preoccupied with all that they need to do, and within an hour and a half, they’re able to direct their minds to focus on the things that really matter to them. I’m amazed by how quickly and effectively mindset shifts take place and creative ideas for overcoming challenges appear.

The No-Fault Zone® process is not just a technique you learn. It leads to a shift in consciousness that supports your health and relationships. It also helps to reprioritize the way you spend your time. I cannot recommend it enough. I’m far from resolving world conflict. Yet, I feel blessed to empower women with the skills to navigate their personal journeys.
